The staff is the friendliest and most helpful. It's my weekly stop. The selection of deli items is amazing in a small space. Mind you it is stocked with Ukrainian, Polish, and some Romanian. They serve up fresh baked Deutsche Bäckerei breads - German wheat, lower in gluten, started in Germany, frozen, then finished baking here. Good for you. Pierogie heaven.
LOVE the pickles and shuba salad. Super authentic! Worth the trip off the main drag of 84 when you're in Portland, and it's one of those where everything we've tried was (kind of weird but) amazing.
Excellent desert. Was there for my vacation in Oregon . The cakes are delicious, the macarons are little pricey but fresh and delicious I can wait to back again
Review is mostly about the piroshky. So good! The beef one. The beef patty was nice and beefy and oniony. Full of flavor. The dough had a slight chew. Of course deep fried. Total comfort food.
Felt obligated to look into my review on this being that I know I've love this place forever... I'm a sucker for eastern European grocery stores. I think they have the best bulk candy selection. They always have delicious fried breads, and always have good cured meats. Often earlier in the day on weekdays, I like to stop in and get some feta fry bread... Well, I assume it's feta it's probably some other kind of cheese, but it's what it reminds me of absolutely amazing the warm it up for you grab extra napkins that usually pretty oily and just eat it on the drive home ... they always have good desserts. Some have interesting, textures that you're not as used to with western deserts, but very often they have quite unique flavor profiles. Lots of layers done beautifully, and always at a great deal. But in the past where they always shine, the brightest is in their bowl candy section I don't know what any of them are called. It seems a little more complicated and a little better put together now if I only knew what they're called so I can tell you which ones to get!
I love drive-by discoveries like my experience at Babushka. It's a well stocked grocery store specializing in Russian goodies. But the real draw are the homemade peroshkis, I opted for the just right spiced beef. While I appreciate that it was ready-to-eat, the warmer that housed it resulted in a chewy dough, kinda like when you microwave bread. In addition, it was oily. Still, I'd order it again, the price is very fair. Service is kind and parking wasn't a problem.
